Interesting term used in a ZD Net article - Platform as a Service (PaaS) Unfortunately, Peter sells the promise and ignores the reality. He sees this as similar to what happened with SMTP, POP, HTTP, etc. Some other points - LAMP,Net, Java - doesn't make much difference. Only guarantee for longevity is if you have options.

The Internet and World Wide Web themselves emerged from open protocols (HTTP, HTML, SMTP, etc) that allowed businesses, individuals and governments to put information online that was accessible to the masses and then to build applications on top of this infrastructure to the benefit of the masses.
