I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I understand the desire for hiring someone who is going to product product.

They often make great team members such as head of products, CTO, head of sales, CFO, etc. About 18 months ago in early 2008 we hired an analyst (pre-MBA), but wanted to wait until after Summer to hire a post-MBA associate. We weren’t ready to hire an associate yet so I offered him a summer internship. It was May.

On Friday, at the LA CTO Forum , I heard from a couple of CTOs having trouble finding good developers. I wouldn’t say it’s 1999 or even 2007, but it certainly has turned around. Update from original - just saw a follow-up post by Ben Kuo - Southern California Technology Jobs Surge. One recruiter tells me it’s “like 1999?

We started the company in the fall of 2006, launched in 2007, and have been offering our services to all kinds of mission critical websites since then. We caught on with the right product, at the right time. I think that we're always looking for great people, but at Edgecast, as compared with other companies, we hire pretty slow.

Messenger : Thorsten von Eicken , RightScale’s Co-Founder and CTO, Chief Architect at Citrix Online (formerly Expertcity) and Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University and UC Santa Barbara. I thought the analogy was preposterous back in 2006-2007 but it has become obvious. Hiring is difficult no matter where you are.
