I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. Rather they should get a part-time Acting CTO who can help close the gap.

On Friday, at the LA CTO Forum , I heard from a couple of CTOs having trouble finding good developers. I wouldn’t say it’s 1999 or even 2007, but it certainly has turned around. Update from original - just saw a follow-up post by Ben Kuo - Southern California Technology Jobs Surge. One recruiter tells me it’s “like 1999?

The company--which is in the business of operating a content delivery network (CDN) to accelerate the delivery of web graphics, multimedia, applications, and more to end users-- recently disclosed it more than doubled its revenues in 2012, and has grown to over 230 employees--all due to a huge amount of demand for CDN services by its customers.

The company was founded in 2007, and the initial emphasis was to deliver to end users a personalized content portal on their smart phone, learning what they like anticipate what they'd like to see, and pay for it using personalized advertising. When I joined the company, I found an amazing technology platform and analytics capability.

Steve Jillings has a long track record of running successful startups in Southern California, ranging from such companies as FrontBridge Technologies (sold to Microsoft in 2005 for over $200M) and Vantage Media (acquired in 2007). I became a VC 12 years ago in 2007 when the pace of deals was much slower. For start, there are many types of businesses that are large or complex “considered purchases” that have higher close rates over the phone than on a web form. I had just left Salesforce.com where I was VP, Products, after they had acquired my second startup.
