It’s not clear that there was big customer demand for some of these products yet entrepreneurs were egged on by VCs to “take the money&# and try and push the market. The former was outsourced, the latter was our own team. It seemed to be purely speculative. I was a victim of this kind of thinking. This is total bullshit.

He references CIO Bernard Golden’s argument, made in The IT Jobs Cloud Computing Will Create , that while some roles may disappear altogether, others will remain, but in much less demand. For instance, he says, it’s probably a safe prediction that lower-level, on-premise IT support roles will still exist, but in fewer numbers.

A great recent example of this was a successful group of entrepreneurs who had created a company that will do $10-12 million in revenue at their system integration business (read: services business) in 2011 after having done $5 million or so in 2010 and $2-3 million in 2009. One big challenge is how to grow the company.
