I've been remiss in posting to this blog. But, what's interesting is that the old SoCal events hosted by folks like the Technology Council seem to be struggling for attendees, while you get 250 to a networking only event during the middle of the day. Very busy on a couple interesting start-ups. More on them in a couple months.
Funk- has plenty of experience on the other side of the table as a venture capitalist, having funded such successful SoCal firms as Sandpiper Networks, Rent.com and Shopzilla. And as might be expected, there is no shortage of advice, varying from blog postings to a seemingly limitless selection of events.
I tend not to go into heat when I hear the latest buzz on the tech blogs about the latest gadgets. I thought I would take an opportunity on this blog to move away from some of the current investment and startup trends, reflect, and dive into the tech history books (as well as my own personal history) by looking at the man and place I believe really put the modern southern California tech community on the map: Bill Gross and Idealab.
They had a prominent NorCal investor already so I thought a SoCal lead would make sense – that I could help them in a more hands-on way. There are other great VC’s in SoCal and there is always the allure of the NorCal guys flying down and talking about how they invested in Google, Facebook, Yahoo! They had agreed!
