The City of Los Angeles said this morning that it will be officially launching its Cleantech Incubator tomorrow, as it attempts to create a cluster of clean technology companies downtown. A new, startup incubator-created by the Art Center College of Design and the California Insitute of Technology --said this morning that it has launched a brand new, design-focused incubator, housed at Idealab. The new incubator is headed by Mark Breitenberg and Erik Hovanec. READ MORE>>.

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology reported last week that they have created a "smart petri dish" which uses Google smart phones and Lego blocks, to automatically monitor cell growth in petri dishes. Usually, petri dishes are placed in incubators, removed for examination, and manually studied under a microscope.

The group said that the winners with Stanford Nitrogen Group , Greenbiotics , and Xite Solar will split the $200,000 in prize money, and also will gain access to the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. The effort is part of a larger national effort by the Department of Energy (DOE) to spur businesses in clean technologies from university labs.

In just the last few weeks, at least five different incubation/acceleration efforts have booted up in the region. Specifically targeted at clean techonlogy firms, the group has more of a traditional incubator program, offering up office space for 6-8 companies, along with support, resources, and mentorship.
