It started around a year ago, as I was driving back from SantaMonica from an event. I thought, it''s great what is going on in SantaMonica, but it''s very hard to be part of the same community, given how far apart the cities are. So, I thought I''d see if there was an interest here to active a community in town.
We were also an investor in the early local listing company, CitySearch – an LA company. DemandMedia has already scaled a tech team to a considerable size in SantaMonica. My commute, for example, from SantaMonica to Century City is less than 15 minutes each way and I never have to take the freeway.
A move to more urban environments (SF over SV, Cambridge over Waltham, London over Thames Valley, SantaMonica / Venice, Flatiron and so forth) as basically young people want to live where young people want to live. In LA we have entertainment, finance, textiles, aerospace, transportation, fashion and so forth.
A market leader in content, music, entertainment, textiles, engineering, aerospace and trade. Idealab, led by Bill Gross, who founded Overture, CitySearch and MANY other business [Pasadena]. I guess SantaMonica is officially “Silicon Beach” in the local people’s minds. North of the 101].
Entertainment. It was Citysearch for women to find guys. We started out with our first event at South Bar (in SantaMonica) with about 30 people in attendance. Since out first event we’ve done large parties at high profiled locations such as, The London, SLS (in Beverly Hills), and The Viceroy (in SantaMonica).
On the other hand, Rosenblatt is one of the biggest reasons why I think Silicon Beach is the future of the entertainment industry in the United States.
