It started around a year ago, as I was driving back from SantaMonica from an event. I thought, it''s great what is going on in SantaMonica, but it''s very hard to be part of the same community, given how far apart the cities are. We want to create businesses and engage with entrepreneurs. We were at ground zero.
We have many seasoned entrepreneurs who have built successful companies here and made a lot of money for investors and themselves. I like to repeat the mantra, “necessity is the mother of all invention,&# meaning that because investors have this expectation you find entrepreneurs that focus on nearer term monetization.
Idealab, led by Bill Gross, who founded Overture, CitySearch and MANY other business [Pasadena]. I guess SantaMonica is officially “Silicon Beach” in the local people’s minds. Still, I kind like the name, well, um, … SantaMonica. Like they truly understood entrepreneurs.
A move to more urban environments (SF over SV, Cambridge over Waltham, London over Thames Valley, SantaMonica / Venice, Flatiron and so forth) as basically young people want to live where young people want to live. So the startup work moves to where the startup founders live and not vice versa. I wish every city could have an 1871.

I then moved to CitySearch, IAC, and then eveentually moved to The Search Agency with David Hughes. It was Citysearch for women to find guys. We started out with our first event at South Bar (in SantaMonica) with about 30 people in attendance. Since out first event we’ve done large parties at high profiled locations such as, The London, SLS (in Beverly Hills), and The Viceroy (in SantaMonica).
