It started around a year ago, as I was driving back from SantaMonica from an event. I thought, it''s great what is going on in SantaMonica, but it''s very hard to be part of the same community, given how far apart the cities are. So, I thought I''d see if there was an interest here to active a community in town.
Web Services, led by Amazon’s AWS, which reduced the costs a further 90%. A move to more urban environments (SF over SV, Cambridge over Waltham, London over Thames Valley, SantaMonica / Venice, Flatiron and so forth) as basically young people want to live where young people want to live. Frankly, I wish LA had one.
Idealab, led by Bill Gross, who founded Overture, CitySearch and MANY other business [Pasadena]. I guess SantaMonica is officially “Silicon Beach” in the local people’s minds. Still, I kind like the name, well, um, … SantaMonica. North of the 101]. Also East of the 405?
I live in the city of SantaMonica. That sets us up nicely for the next phase of the web. So can you really build a great tech firm outside of Silicon Valley? Sure, but it will be different than the Bay Area ones. Let me use LA as an example. Los Angeles. And of course you have Hollywood.
