We all like to think of startups as “non hierarchic&# organizations and to some extent that should be true. I never built a Google-sized business but I did build an organization from scratch that grew to 120 employees in 5 countries before we sold it. An obvious example would be in sales.

The best ones bring in more executive leadership so you can appropriate allocate resources across sales, marketing, product, engineering and support. You finally need to start planning your product roadmap a bit further than your 2-week sprints so that the rest of the organization has a chance to preplan for new features.

There is no rule that marketing needs to report to the founder, or that every startup needs a chief operating officer. Some of the best startup cultures have no hierarchical reporting, yet everyone knows who drives each of the initiatives. Technology can be used to facilitate customer support and sales, as well as enhance your product.

Even three person organizations are political. Due to the language and culture issues in Europe we opted for a country structure with an MD in each country and local sales, marketing & customers support staff. This is akin in the US to having sales staff in NY, SF & LA with your HQ in one of these locations.
