You see them on Twitter, Facebook or Plancast plotting out their next 12 conference. They are professional conference attendees. Inevitably a certain number of entrepreneurs feel compelled to attend every conference. It’s not possible to be a conference ho and a leader at the same time. Look at me!
(In case it’s not obvious it’s a play on the Nike slogan, “Just Do It.&# ) I believe that being successful as an entrepreneur requires you to get lots of things done. Entrepreneurs make fast decisions and move forward knowing that at best 70% of their decisions are going to be right. This paralyzes most people.
This is part of my new series on what makes an entrepreneur successful. I originally posted it on VentureHacks , one of my favorite websites for entrepreneurs. I wanted to also post the series here to have it as a resource on my blog for future entrepreneurs who stop by. If you haven’t spent time over there you should.
I’m often asked the question about why there aren’t more women who are entrepreneurs. My inspiration to become an entrepreneur came from my mom, not my dad. She was the dominant figure in my family and was both an entrepreneur and a community leader. On my blog I’ve been hesitant to take the topic head on.
I wrote recently about etiquette when you meet people at conferences or events so now that I have this done I feel I need to say some words about connecting on social networks. Let’s start with a discussion of existing social networks and then how to approach people on them. The old standard business networking tool.
So, to help other female entrepreneurs, they founded TuesdayNights (www.tuesdaynights.org), a group in LA which helps female entrepreneurs connect with capital and each other to improve their access to capital. In business networking settings, it’s not very memorable to talk only about business. Try to find common ground outside of business.
My trip was scheduled around the annual Web Summit and the f.ounders conference, both of which have become the hottest must-attend event in Europe and rivaling any great conference in the US. It was the best 5 days of networking I spent last year. There were senior members from Facebook and Google. It will not.

KPCB announced its new sFund, a $250M fund which will invest in entrepreneurs in the social space, specifically highlighting Facebook as "the best place to build the next generation" of social businesses. KPCB said its new sFund will focus on the next generation of social entrepreneurs.
I often recommend business networking as the most effective way for a startup founder to find investors, advisors, and even key executive candidates. The answer is still the same, but I have learned over the years that there is an etiquette to this process, just like there is for social networking. Attend an investment conference.
