I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?
Mentor relationships are not immune to the laws of human interactions. Without active management on the part of the protégé, the meetings with their mentor will become less frequent and less impactful, ultimately accelerating the end of the relationship. I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.
The program is basically to take entrepreneurs, pair them with a mentor who is also an entrepreneur themselves, either a CEO or a CTO. It's structured so that they get funding, office space, all of the Internet resources, tools they need from mentors. There might be one or two mentors, one might be a CTO, another, a CEO.
Our founder, Yves Sisteron, was my mentor and board member at my first startup. So I patiently waiting until there was a good opportunity to bring Stuart on board and took the opportunity when it presented itself. Sometimes life presents that opportunity, sometimes it does not. Mafias matter a lot to me, as well.
By the end of my sophomore year, I decided to go after this full time, and that's when I officially brought on a CTO, Shiv Prakash, and we went at it in the summer of 2011, and the rest is kind of history. That was a really short timeframe, but we were able to pull it off, and my sister and I actually went to present for him.
We also had awesome group of mentors that included: David Waxman (Co-founder of PeoplePC, Spot Runner and Firefly Network), Paige Craig (CEO of BetterWorks ), Josh MacAdam (Co-founder/CTO at Ming.ly All presentations were of extremely high quality and teams did a killer job. August was a slow month in terms of traffic and I was away for a lot of the month, but there were some really great posts at the intersection of startups, technology, product and being a Startup CTO. The co-founder core team, including a CTO, should be fully formed and passionate enough to be working on the project full time. The 10 startups presented a mix of innovation for consumers and enterprise with some sure to please twists. After the presentations were revealed, the crowd started to place their bets on their favorites.

We hired the ex-CTO of Sears, and other senior executives out of Disney in software. I've sat in plenty of board meetings as a public company officer, with a board meeting every quarter, and I found myself spending hundreds of hours in preparation for presentation in board meetings and to meet requirements for Dodd Frank.
