I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.
Using my StartupRoar as a radar, I came across a great post by Gabriel Weinberg Do you really need a full-timehire for that? Hiring seems to be the preferred use of seed funds (by investors and founders), whereas I'd prefer a focus on customer acquisition. In other words, they come in asking for help with sourcing and hiring.
It was like having a bunch of mini- Free Startup CTO Consulting Sessions all in one room. Structure developmentcontracts appropriately or directing the in-house team appropriately. Structure developmentcontracts appropriately or directing the in-house team appropriately. Plan for past the initial MVP.
The terms “CTO&# and “VP Engineering&# have such stigmas associated with what they are that I’m sure some people will feel uncomfortable with the definitions I’ve put forward. I hope many will read this and have an answer for the question, “what’s the different between a CTO and a VP of Engineering?&#.
Would you create contracts without an attorney? Just like attorneys, technical advisors can help navigate waters that many find murky. The Tactical Technical Advisor stays on top of the development team to ensure that they’re team is building the right thing in a high-quality, efficient manner. And Maybe You Need Two!
I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit. Accounting?
I've done four Free CTO Consulting Sessions in the past month with startup founders who all had run into variations of the same problem. They didn't feel they had visibility into timelines and costs for development of their software. The teams involved didn't seem to be exhibiting many of the Symptoms of a Weak Development Team.
If you are on the lower complexity end, the key is defining small chunks of work that can be done quickly by a developer. If you do not break it down into small pieces, its hard to make progress with part-time resources, freelancers, etc. Structure developmentcontracts appropriately or directing the in-house team appropriately.
TechEmpower has been instrumental in developing chatbots like these, utilizing generative AI to sift through internal documents and user manuals, enabling them to provide precise answers to customer service questions. It also facilitates rapid prototyping, allowing for quicker iterations and thus shorter development cycles.
This strategy is called “organic growth,” yet it alone may yield only a fraction of the potential you could achieve, unless you add the additional strategies of partnerships and M&A (mergers and acquisitions). Add basic partner contracts or alliances. Add basic partner contracts or alliances. External scanning for resources.
One of those is Hollywood-based FilmBreak (www.filmbreak.com), which is applying the world of social networking, media, and the Internet to help film-makers gain access to the analytics and insights they need to better market their films. We're not necessarily the platform to help up-and-comers or amateurs to be successful.
We then help push those videos through social media channels, and help them go viral. That''s relevant, because of our third piece, where we have been hired by traditional media companies, to basically provide them a turnkey, outsources content acquisition team. Those two pieces helped feed each other.
Understanding where your VC partner sits in their respective fund and where their fund is in the cycle of its investment lifecycle will help you understand your VCs behavior. In addition to helping manage the board Chris also helps represent the interests of the angel investors / common stock holders.
Content delivery networks are there to help improve the performance, and serve up that content more intelligently to devices, to thd network, and to users, as they consume the Internet. The Internet doesn't work right, and is broken, and without a CDN, you can't do what you need to do if you're the CTO of a large website.

Even if you are looking in all the right places, it helps to know what you are looking for. The reason is that good attributes apply equally well to “external” partners, as they do to internal partners, like a co-founder or CTO. Look at the big picture first of development, finance, and marketing/sales. Complementary skills.

We also have a cloud-baesd, billing and practice management solutions, which enables them to manage all of their internal financial processes, and we also have solutions for billing and cloud-based outsourcing of back office tasks. I founded that with the former CTO of my first company, Kevin Smilak, who now works at Google.
August was a slow month in terms of traffic and I was away for a lot of the month, but there were some really great posts at the intersection of startups, technology, product and being a Startup CTO. thought it would be helpful to put some of my thoughts into a blog post and hopefully spur some conversation in the comments and over email.
One of the readers asked my opinion around sharing your startup concept: My first question has always been - how do you protect your idea while shopping around for feedback, partners, developers, etc.? Startups that come to me and ask me to sign an NDA in order to get Free Startup CTO Consulting really are missing it.

There's a large number of on-demand services which have been appearing recently, to help people deal with almost every aspect of their life. The most common ones I see and salute are CEO, CFO, and CTO. What you really need is a VP of Marketing and Customer Development, who can help with lead generation and honing the message, rather than an executive to manage a sales team and existing customers. Chief Sales Officer (VP Sales). Chief Legal Officer.

Main February 23, 2010 Advice for CTO Founders: Dont Let Business Kill the Business Founding a technology company is an amazing thing. Too often, however, I have found CTO / Founders paired with business people who not only don't add value, but frequently detract from the value of the business.
On the day of Miigle’s public launch, we chatted about developing his team, lessons learned, and how World Cup soccer fits into his vision. Unless people feel a certain level of appeal towards what you are doing, they are less likely to want to help you. Fast forward a year and a half later, and a lot has changed for Luc and Miigle.

He gossips with the office manager who tells 3 software developers. CEO, VP Products and CTO must all be in the physical location. I don’t like distributed development teams in early stage businesses. I prefer the first sales hires to be in the home office. He downs cold ones with the head of biz dev.
