SpaceX is said to be in talks with local government officials about setting up a new rocket factory in the Port of Los Angeles, a location that would give it easy access to the ocean for transporting its next-generation Starship and Super Heavy launch vehicles to its coastal launchpad sites in Florida.

Noone had gone on to take a job at SpaceX and Ellis at Blue Origin, but the two remained in touch and had an idea for building rockets quickly and cheaply — with the vision that they wanted to eventually build these rockets on Mars. The two had met in college at USC in their jet propulsion lab. space and missile defense program.

Los Angeles-based Relativity , a space launch startup which is developing automation technology designed to automate construction of rockets, said on Thursday that it has signed a deal for a launch site at Cape Canaveral. Relativity is venture backed by Playground Global, Y Combinator, Social Capital, Phillip Spector, and Mark Cuban.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX, the high profile commercial space vehicle firm headed by Elon Musk, said this weekend that it has successfully conducted a full mission-length firing of its Falcon 9 launch vehicle's first stage. The firm's test occurred 10:30 Saturday night at the firm's MacGregor, Texas test site.
