Last week, we posted the results of benchmarking several web application development and frameworks. We received comments, recommendations, advice, criticism, questions, and most importantly pull requests from dozens of readers and developers. First up is data from the EC2 m1.large First up is data from the EC2 m1.large
This is an EC2 test run on a pair of Large instances. Among the many factors to consider when choosing a web development framework, raw performance is easy to objectively measure. We ran each test on EC2 and our i7 hardware. First up is plain JSON serialization on Amazon EC2 large instances. Starting again with EC2.

Happy Halloween fans of web development frameworks! One particularly interesting anomaly is the dominance of Windows paired with Mongo on EC2 in the Updates test. The performance is only slightly lower than the same pairing on i7, where in most cases our i7s (2600K workstations, to be precise) and EC2 (m1.large)
We''ve included Windows on EC2 results as a separate set of data within the results view but caution that the results should be considered preliminary. Equipping the i7 workstation with a high-performance SSD has given the database updates test the largest performance gulf between our physical hardware and EC2 m1.large.
On EC2, the Netty and Vert.x The maximum query and update performance for Mongo on EC2 is substantially higher than MySQL. We provide web and mobile application development services and are passionate about application performance. Once again, bear in mind that these tests are network-bound by our gigabit Ethernet.
Los Angeles-based cloud graphics company OTOY , a developer of cloud-based, game rendering engines, said Thursday that it will launch its Brigade path tracing and rendering technology to Amazon EC2.
As with previous rounds, the developer community has contributed several additional frameworks for Round 4, bringing the total to 57! Onion , a C platform contributed by Coralbits is now included in the EC2 JSON serialization test and the results are extremely impressive, clocking in over 52,000 JSON responses per second.
We''ve just posted Round 6, which includes several more developer community-provided framework test implementations: Beego, Dart, Hapi, Jester, Luminus, Nancy, Yaf, Plack, Play-Slick, and Undertow. Not only is Wrk an excellent tool; @wg is an awesome developer whose contributions we greatly appreciate!

What’s astonishing and few other than those who lived it as startups (I launched my second startup in this era) realize is how profound of an impact that rise of Amazon AWS (S3 & EC2) had on the startup market. The “A Round” of my startup in 1999 was $16.5 million and my A Round in 2005 was only $500,000 (and that’s all I ever raised).
They then launched processing capabilities (EC2) and we startups suddenly didn’t need to buy production servers. Amazon allowed 22-year-old tech developers to launch companies without even raising capital. Every startup I knew in 2005 (when I started my second company) was using this.
It launched open API’s and created a platform whereby third-party developers could come build any app they wanted and Facebook didn’t even want (yet) to take any money from them to do so. Twitter seems to have become a bit allergic to third-party developers (or maybe vice-versa). Social Networking Will Split Into Layers.
We also have a web experience, and we host that on Amazon EC2. We keep track of all of the people in a project, the components they are working on, and versions of all of those documents that exist, and how they've developed overtime. Is this a mobile application, web service, or how does it work?
For us, we are currently deployed on the Amazon EC2 cloud, and that essentially allows us to horizontally scale in the way that we need to. There are months and years of continued development on TheBlu, both in terms of the amount of content, as well as additional features. That's a key change right there.
Yes, social networks of 2010 have much better usability, have better developed 3rd-party platforms and many more people are connected. It launched open API’s and created a platform whereby third-party developers could come build any app they wanted and Facebook didn’t even want (yet) to take any money from them to do so.
Co-founder and CEO Mark Weidick was VP and General Manager of Cisco’s TelePresence Video Exchange where he was responsible for a team of 150 developers that built and supported video exchange platforms for AT&T and other Service Providers. Co-founder and lead software developer Anil Kumar was a led software engineer for WebEx.
A very interesting topic, especially for those of us involved in developing for start-ups. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Level 1 & 2 Burden is still on the developers, you still have infrastructure. Amazon EC2 - uses it for natural language processing. It's funny.
For decades the “layering&# of technology has allowed us to develop IT systems and networks in a specialized way that let’s best-of-breed technology solutions to emerge at each layer of the stack and to allow people with different skill sets to specialize in key areas without having to have competence in every technology arena.
In its simplest terms, we install OpenStack, plus two years of IP that we''ve developed here at MetaCloud, onto our client''s server, at their data center. Amazon EC2 would be considered fully managed cloud, which also happens to be off premise. What does MetaCloud do? That is on premise, off premise, fully managed, and do-it-yourself.
