This past week has had an interesting confluence of events that's led me to conclude that I want to start doing a lot of visible networking among the tech / web crowd here in Los Angeles. Mark mentioned Twiistup and VentureNet , but generally the room felt that it was hit and miss with all events. And I'll post about it.
photo from left to right: me, QD3, Brian Solis, Chamillionaire, Ian Rogers and Brian Zisk – most of whom I got to know through Twiistup panels). Tip : It is always a good idea to email the other participants in advance with topics of discussion and alert the moderator if you’re worried about the direction it might take.
Twiistup is just 2 weeks away and there have been a whole slew of announcements within these past few days. And now what you have all been waiting for.the TechZulu Twiistup discount. Twiistup 007 Speaker List: Peter Guber. Twiistup 007 Showoff's: . Alex Quilici. He is also a Venture Partner at True Ventures. Paul Grahm.
At the Twiistup panel last week, there was a debate over whether big companies could be created here, which is ridiculous--Demand Media is the latest example there, we've got Cornerstone OnDemand coming out soon, and there is no question there are market leading, large revenue companies coming out of Southern California.
I recently hosted a panel at the Twiistup Conference about LA tech companies. He just pounded out design and code for a few weeks and got Plancast up on the web and users adopting his product right away. In Los Angeles we are at a disadvantage because the founder(s) often have no experience in building consumer web applications.
Some attendees came in a bit later on Sunday as they coded and designed throughout the previous night however everyone was “in the Loft” by mid-morning, along with other guests such as Paige Craig and Francisco Dao ( 50 Kings , Twiistup, and Writer at Fast Company).
