A few weeks ago, the University of Southern California announced a new startup incubator, the Viterbi Startup Garage ([link] backed by such notable investors as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and the United Talent Agency. What''s the mission behind the new startup incubator? How did the incubator come about?
USC revealed this morning that it has created a new, startup accelerator on campus, the Viterbi Startup Garage , which will help students and alumni start technology companies in Los Angeles.

My degree is from USC in big data. As you probably know, Viterbi is the engineering school at USC.
For today's interview, we spoke to Dave Eastman, the Director of the Viterbi Startup Garage, a startup incubator that is run by the University of Southern California, out of its location in Marina Del Rey. Obviously, we closed in March of last year, just like the rest of USC, and we have been virtual since then.
How is this different than accelerator or incubator? David Carter: There is a lot of misunderstanding on what an incubator is, and what an accelerator is. When I was at Amplify, we had a lot of people wondering what an accelerator was, and how we differentiated from an incubator. Entrepreneurs should seek those people out.
When we arrived at USC, we began to talk about how we struggled during the recruiting process. Our coaches did not have relationships, and I ended up walking onto the USC baseball team, and Kai ended up walking onto their club lacrosse team. Form there, we got interest from incubators, angel investors, and venture capital.

Southern California apparently has no shortage of investors, entrepreneurs, and others eager to help budding entrepreneurs. Howard Marks: We're a startup accelerator, which will help entrepreneurs become successful in 90 days.

StartEngine said the new office is a split-level loft, with access to such locations as the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and a few metro stops from Pasadena. The accelerator is the first one to target the downtown area with an office location.

I then became and EIR at UC San Diego, and joined EvoNexus, the not-for-profit incubator run by the Irvine Company. There's a tightness which is squeezing the lifeblood from the entrepreneurs, even as it remains an amazing place. The first step, is to attract more entrepreneurs. Stacy Stubblefield: We actually started out of an incubator, based out of Beverly Hills. We were working on a bunch of different projects when we first started at the incubator. Stacy and Darren, our other co-founder who's not here right now, actually graduated from USC. How did the company start? What were you doing before?
