I recently had a conversation with an pre-launch startup where they discussed how SEO was going to be really important for them. And to me, there seems to be a lot of confusion by founders of startups around search engine optimization (SEO) and how it works for a startup. I won't say that I'm truly an expert on SEO.

SEO / SEM are promotional techniques for marketing through the Google distribution channel, which have yielded huge benefits to many companies – Yelp being a prime example. How do people drive SEO growth? This industry is so mature now that the cat-and-mouse game between companies and Google has gotten sophisticated.

He was a co-founder of Applied Semantics, which started the AdSense technology, which they sold to Google in 2003. Back then, it was a much different game, and there was not much of an emphasis on social and more on SEO. What we've found, is that news and politics works very well on Facebook. That's part of our strategy.

San Diego-based Newsforce (www.newsforce.com) is a startup which is looking to take advantage of the hunger of the newspaper and media business for revenue, and has created a product which takes press releases and commercial content, and inserts them onto news sites in "sponsored content" blocks. Tell us a little bit about Newsforce?

Then I check and manage our Google Adwords campaign and check our analytics/stats. However, as I read more about your focus, you are using these things in a slightly different way, i.e., not sure if SEO is as important. I recently posted about SEO for Startups. Is/was SEO important for MakeItWork? Great stuff!

To learn how to advertise on Google to get traffic to your website or offline business read “ Advanced Google Adwords ” by Brad Geddes. Share with them how excited you are, ask them what they think and find out if there is one person they can share the good news with. The best place to find forums is Google.
