Image Metrics said it would merge Big Stag's avatar creation platform into its existing, real-time video animation technology. Big Stage--which was a spinout of technology developed at USC--allowed users to upload several photographs of themselves into software, which then automatically converted those photographs into a realistic avatar.

Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.

Sherry Gunther: MyMiniPeeps.com is a unique, online community for kids ages 6-13, which is both a social networking community as well as a game site. They're looking for deeper social networking, and more of a gaming element on sites. Plus, exposure through USC led me to the Tech Coast Angels.

We allow them to have virtual store fronts, portable stores, which they can place on their social networking profiles, on their own dot com, on their blogs, and so forth--anywhere fans already interact with the artist.
