Recently I wrote a post arguing to make the definition of a Startup more inclusive than that to which Silicon Valley, fueled by Venture Capital return profiles, would sometimes like to attach to the word. Actually, there is tons of wealth in San Diego but it isn’t organized well to support them.

Sales lagged. While other groups tested other fish oils and found no evidence of concrete cardiovascular benefits , Amarin pressed on with a massive study, bleeding cash for years. But Amarin didn’t have the evidence that lowering triglycerides with fish oil would really help people. Amarin’s shares sank.

We raised a seed round of capital in 1999 and our first venture capital round was the first week of March 2000 (e.g. I was on an airplane 2-3 times / week meeting potential customers, investors, employees, business partners and the press. We found a way to get a round of venture capital closed after all of this.
