Visitors to Los Angeles-based video streaming service Hulu Friday were greeted with a surprise "redesign" of the web site, as part of a Hulu April Fool's gag.

Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles web developer, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” And he’s right there’s a big difference.

Santa Barbara-based FindTheBest.com , the online comparison site headed by DoubleClick founder Kevin O'Connor , has turned to a Google and DoubleClick vet to serve as President. Yaghoubi was also an executive serving under O'Connor at DoubleClick, where he was Vice President of Global Media. FindTheBest is venture backed by Kleiner Perkins.

Los Angeles-based CrownPeak , a developer of web content management systems (CMS), has raised $1.75M in a Series C funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the firm today. CrownPeak, which is headed by Jim Howard, develops software used by companies to easily modify and maintain web sites, without requiring web designers.

La Mirada-based Crazy Egg , which develops a web analytics and visualization tool for tracking web site visitors clicks, has released version 2.0 of the web site. Crazy Egg provides web designers with input on what elements users are clicking on through visual "heat maps".

We had to figure out what would help the other 90 percent build better and more interesting sites. We noticed that many of those sites were not pre-populating the site with content, were not drawing from external channels, and were not starting conversations on Twitter, Facebook, and elsewhere.

Those bots retrieve a copyof your web page so that they can include relevant terms from that page in their search index. Not all bots are benign however.Some bots go through your website looking for web forms and email addresses to send you spam. You need to be able to check your sites raw web logs.

They understand that this user type will freely grant Facebook access to share their online activity, whether it is reading the news, listening to a song, or visiting some random site that really has no business engaging with your “friends”.
