Our interview this morning is with David Sacks, CEO of Geni.com, an online family tree and socialnetworking site, as well as Yammer, the instant messaging startup spun out of Geni.com at TechCrunch50. Most socialnetworking sites have a problem with having lots of pageviews, but advertising that isn't very valuable.
Yammer, a Twitter-like spinout out of high profile Los Angeles genealogy firm Geni.com, has scored the top prize at the TechCrunch50 awards in San Francisco. Yammer offers instant messaging focused on internal corporate communications, and is the result of work by engineers at Geni. Geni is the online, Web 2.0-style
West Hollywood-based Geni, and instant messaging spinout Yammer have both raised $5M in funding from the firms' existing backers, Charles River Ventures and the Founders Fund, according to regulatory filings and reports. Microsoft in late June announced to have acquired socialnetwork for enterprises Yammer at $ 1.2 He says,” all closing conditions for Microsoft’s acquisition of Yammer have been met, and the deal is completed”. Spataro says , “We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome the Yammer team to the Microsoft Office Division.
By now you probably know that David Sacks , co-founder of PayPal and founder of both Geni & Yammer made some observations on Facebook that Silicon Valley “as we know it” was coming to an end. “In order to create a successful new company, you have to find an idea that. In the era of socialnetworking if you can’t figure out how to get intro’d to me you probably aren’t cut out to be an entrepreneur. In the video we did a lengthy discussion on “the return of enterprise software&# talking about companies: Atlassian, Jive Software, KickApps, Yammer and SquareSpace.
It should include all of your communications, no matter what socialnetwork, and no matter who on your team has done it. That is relationship nirvana, my vision of social business. Now, you don't have to go to Twitter to listen, LinkedIn to listen, your email inbox, find contacts in Google Contacts, or even Yammer or Hootsuite.
LinkedIn – Lots of people talk about LinkedIn as a socialnetwork. Of course I could go on and on including businesses like AirBnB, DropBox, Box.net, Yammer and so on. Expect a deflationary revolution in the global telecom market – at a minimum for voice services. All deflationary. But by now you more than got the point.
But the cloud-based stuff that we use every day as consumers (websites, Twitter, Facebook, Zynga) or as businesses (dropbox, gmail, Yammer, GoToMeeting) all rely on business logic created by application companies. I have talked in the past about other layers that are emerging particularly in socialnetworking and mobile applications.
