The UCLA Anderson School of Management has launched a new, 10,000-square-foot startup accelerator space on campus, which it says is aimed at encouraging students, faculty, and alumni to create new businesses. The school plans to run "demo days" and other events in the same space. The incubator is being sponsored by Cadillac.

A startup, Sparefoot , headed by two former UCLA students who founded the company out of their experiences at the school, said today that it is offering up a $5,000 scholarship to students who use its service. Sparefoot is venture backed by Silverton Partners, FLOODGATE, and Capital Factory, and is located in Austin, Texas.

A new startup accelerator, SCALE Aerospace Ventures, launched in Los Angeles on Tuesday, backed by UCLA and Starburst, the company that had backed the Techstars Starburst Space Accelerator. Starburst said it was awarded a 2020 Venture Challenge grant of $1.4 The first class of the accelerator runs from May 10th through August 6th.

Gevo , a startup which is developing renewable chemicals and biofuels technology, has filed for an IPO, according to an S-1 filing by the firm Thursday afternoon. Gevo--which is now based in Englewood, Colorado--was started in Pasadena, and has licensed technology from both the University of California, Los Angeles, and Caltech.

So my wife sprung into action and contacted our nearest university, UCLA, to see whether they had a need for “care packages” for incoming students who had no parents or support system. It turned out that UCLA had a Guardian Scholar program set up since they have around 100 students entering every year out of foster care / homelessness.
